Lanzarote - Island of Fire

Lanzarote is one of the most easterly of the Canary Islands and lies just seventy miles of the coast of Saharan Africa. It has an enviable round year climate that is characterized by extremely low rainfall and temperatures that rarely fall below 20 degrees celcius even in the winter months.

Today Lanzarote is best known as the Island of Fire, as a result of the world's largest ever volcanic eruption lasting six years from 1730. This covered around one quarter of the island in lava that today gives parts of Lanzarote a lunar-like landscape.

For such a small island Lanzarote is big on attractions offering visitors much more than just beautiful beaches and volcanic vistas. Lanzarote owes much of its effort to the island born artist and architect Cesar Manrique, who fought to save Lanzarote from the sort of overdevelopment you now find in other sunspots. He also created the most unique tourist attractions imaginable such as Jameos Del Agua and El Mirador del Rio.
